Description

Really Raising Standards in Writing in UKS2!

Overview:

This upper KS2 course will offer you practical advice on how to plan and develop high quality teaching and learning sequences in English that link reading to writing in a meaningful way. A variety of picture and chapter books will be explored, and time will be spent looking at the impact of using age-appropriate non-fiction texts and engaging poetry to ensure a broad and balanced English curriculum. Different forms of visual literacy will also be used to inspire children’s writing.

During the training, you will focus on age-related expectations in writing and be given a wealth of strategies and resources, including resource material, that you will be able to take immediately back into the classroom and use to stimulate and invigorate your literacy teaching. These will include oracy activities, the power of role play and different ways to scaffold writing. Time will also be spent sharing ideas on how to model writing effectively and on how to teach pupils to draft, proof-read and edit their writing so they can grow in confidence and independence.

A high-quality text will also be given, on the day, to illustrate how to develop this effective book-led learning approach.

The course aims:

  • To identify the key elements of speaking and listening and how they can be effectively used to feed into writing in Upper KS2 with a specific focus on how to explicitly develop pupils’ vocabulary.
  • To revisit KS 1 writing skills and how they are developed in lower Key Stage 2. To then focus on the Upper Key Stage 2 age-related writing expectations that be assessed in the writing moderation process.
  • To identify and address the gaps in learning and to share appropriate texts, resources and activities to close them.
  • To show how to plan strong learning journeys that scaffold and challenge all pupils.
  • To spend time looking at the most effective ways to model the writing process to children that will scaffold their learning and encourage their independence.
  • To explore a number of planning, proof-reading and editing activities that will support pupils in becoming active writers.
  • To give valuable advice about how to support the lowest attaining pupils to accelerate their writing skills.
  • To share ideas for challenging greater depth pupils and really focus on developing children’s confidence as writers.
  • To share a wide variety of well-loved and new texts that will encourage pupils to see themselves as readers and writers. Teachers will be shown stimulating picture books, short stories and chapter books, engaging non-fiction texts and a wide variety of poetry.
  • To show how art and film can be utilized effectively to inspire pupils’ literacy learning.
  • To illustrate how cross-curricular writing can help pupils to hone their writing skills.
  • To share the latest information about the assessment of writing to prepare your pupils for the transition through upper KS 2 and their formal assessment at the end of Year 6.
